Kobiashvili claims Georgian prize

FC Schalke 04's Levan Kobiashvili has been voted Georgian Player of the Year after a poll of football writers.
FC Schalke 04 midfielder Levan Kobiashvili has been voted Georgian Player of the Year by the country's football writers.

Strong competition
Kobiashvili scooped the prize after collecting 202 points in a poll carried out by the Georgian sports weekly Sarbieli, beating off competition from Malkhaz Asatiani, FC Lokomotiv Moskva's 24-year-old midfielder, and Kakha Kaladze, the 27-year-old AC Milan full-back.

Melkadze mark
Formerly with SC Freiburg, Kobiashvili helped Schalke to the runners-up spot in the German Bundesliga as well as to the German Cup final, where they lost to FC Bayern München. FC Dinamo Tbilisi striker Levan Melkadze, 25, was named the Georgian league's Player of the Year for 2004/05.
