Best Defender 2005

John Terry
Although Terry finished up as a losing semi-finalist in the UEFA Champions League as Liverpool FC swept José Mourinho's team aside in the last four, it was impossible to ignore his towering displays – particularly against FC Barcelona where he capped off a terrific performance with the decisive goal.

The seemingly ageless full-back was at his rampaging best as AC Milan reached the final and there are few players more adept at turning defence to attack than the Brazilian.

Jamie Carragher
centre-half was the spine of Liverpool's back line throughout the tournament putting his heart and soul into every tackle and header alongside fellow nominee Sami Hyypiä.

Sami Hyypiä
The Finnish giant returned to his best form alongside Carragher as part of Liverpool's mean defence. He also popped up with a stunning goal against Juventus FC in the quarter-finals.

Paolo Maldini
The veteran Milan captain capped another impressive season with only his second European goal for the club in the first half of the final. And his age-defying displays helped hugely in getting the Italians that far.

Alessandro Nesta
The central defender underlined his reputation as one of the world's best defenders with his consistenly excellent performances throughout the season.
