Croatian football was today mourning the loss of one of its brightest young talents after NK Osijek's Under-21 international Danijel Popovic was killed in a car accident.
Popovic was killed at the wheel of his car en route from Vukovar to his home village Dalj last night. The 21-year-old lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a post at the side of the road. The post, which was carrying overhead power cables, fell on to the car and Popovic died instantly.
Milan Calosevic, 18, a friend who was travelling with Popovic, suffered severe injuries and was in a critical condition in hospital today. Osijek have already announced that their match this weekend against NK Zagreb has been postponed.
Popovic joined Osijek in the summer, having spent the second half of last season abroad with SC Bastia in France. Previously the leading scorer in the season division with NK Vukovar 91, he started this season with four goals in Osijek's first eleven matches, including one last Saturday in the 3-1 defeat by HNK Cibalia.
A regular member of Croatia's U21 side, Popovic was on the scoresheet in their opening qualifying match of the 2002-04 UEFA European Under-21 Championship when they beat Estonia 3-1.
