IFK Göteborg earned a 1-1 draw in their Allsvenskan play-off first-leg match against Västra Frölunda.
IFK Göteborg scored a priceless away goal to earn a 1-1 draw in their Allsvenskan play-off first-leg match against Västra Frölunda IF.
Tonight's hosts, who finished third in the Superettan to earn the two-legged tie against the team that finished third from bottom in the top flight, scored first through George Mourad just after the interval. The goal delighted the 10,000 fans in the crowd who were hoping for a positive first-leg result.
However, Göteborg fought back and levelled ten minutes later through Tomas Rosenkvist. By the end of the night, Göteborg will feel hard done by that they did not claim a win after creating several chances. That they failed to score again was largely due to the heroics of John Alvbåge in the Frölunda goal.
The second leg will be played on Sunday afternoon at Göteborg's Gamla Ullevi home and has already been dubbed the Battle of Gothenburg. Göteborg, the two-time UEFA Cup winners and record 17-time Swedish champions, are battling to preserve a 26-year stay in the top flight.
