France round-up: Lyon leapfrog beaten Auxerre

Olympique Lyonnais took advantage of AJ Auxerre's defeat to take top spot in Ligue 1.

Defending champions Olympique Lyonnais took advantage of AJ Auxerre's defeat tonight to take top spot in Ligue 1 with a 2-1 victory against Le Havre AC.

From fifth to first
While Lyon were victorious on their travels with a late strike, Auxerre went down to a last-gasp goal against top-flight newcomers AC Ajaccio. It means Lyon jump to first from fifth place, ahead of Auxerre by one point.

On their way
Lyon's success came courtesy of goals from France midfield player Eric Carrière and Brazilian defender Claudio Caçapa. The 29-year-old Carrière, a major contributor in Lyon's Le Championnat triumph last season, scored after just eleven minutes to set Lyon on their way.

Le Tallec equaliser
However, an equaliser for Le Havre came in the 56th minute through talented youngster Anthony Le Tallec. Yet Lyon bounced back and took all three points with Caçapa's goal four minutes from time to condemn Le Havre to a sixth defeat of the campaign.

Regragui winner
Auxerre, who like Lyon will be in UEFA Champions League action next week, were beaten by a last-minute effort from Ajaccio's Hoalid Regragui. The three points move Ajaccio up to 13th place on 17 points, five clear of Le Havre in 17th.
