Hamburger SV will be without Nico-Jan Hoogma until the new year after he suffered a triple skull fracture.

Accidental clash
The 34-year-old midfield player was hurt following a collision towards the end of the 3-1 win at 1. FC Nürnberg at the weekend and a scan on Monday revealed that he has sustained a fractured skull which will keep him out of action for at least five weeks.

Severe headache
The former FC Twente and SC Cambuur Leeuwarden player complained of a severe headache on Sunday afternoon which team physician Dr Oliver Dierk initially suspected was "probably due to mild concussion" but subsequent scans revealed that Hoogma's problems were more serious.

Winter break
With his right eye almost completely closed by swelling after he was substituted midway through the game in Nürnberg, Hoogma's chances of playing again in 2002 have been dashed. With the German winter break starting on 15 December, he will not see first-team action again until the resumption of the 1. Bundesliga campaign on 25 January.
