England round-up: In-form Beattie leaves it late

West Ham United FC remain bottom of the table after losing to a last-minute goal at home to Southampton FC.

West Ham United FC remain bottom of the English Premiership and without a home league win this season after James Beattie struck in added time to earn Southampton FC a 1-0 victory at Upton Park tonight.

Home onslaught
Southampton only arrived at the ground 30 minutes before kick-off after their coach got stuck in traffic, and they were on the defensive for much of the first half as West Ham penned them back with wave after wave of attacks.

Defoe chance
Jermain Defoe headed a superb opening wide of Antti Niemi's right-hand post, while Paolo Di Canio shot over and Ian Pearce hooked an effort wide. The best chance of the half also fell to Pearce on 35 minutes when he found himself clean through on goal but Niemi blocked his strike well. However, Southampton almost sneaked ahead five minutes before half-time when Beattie headed just wide.

Beattie winner
West Ham also started the second half at a high tempo, but Southampton hung on and began to make attacking inroads of their own. Beattie had a penalty claim turned down before converting the winning goal from close range following a superb centre from the left flank by fellow striker Brett Ormerod. Southampton remain tenth, but now have 23 points, while West Ham are bottom with 12 points.
