Real Betis Balompié winger David Odonkor will miss the next three months of the season after the Spanish Primera División club confirmed he will require surgery on his injured knee.
The 22-year-old suffered the injury on international duty with Germany in their 1-1 UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying draw in Cyprus on 15 November. "The cartilage has come away from the kneecap in the player's right knee," Betis doctor Tomas Calero said. "The German Football Association will cover the cost of the surgery."
Odonkor, who has ten caps and appeared in four of Germany's games at the FIFA World Cup finals, joined Betis from BV Borussia Dortmund for €6m during the close season. Despite making six league outings for his new team, he has played the full 90 minutes only once. He will stay in Germany for six weeks while he recovers from the operation, which will take place in his homeland.
