Geideck handed Arminia reins

Thomas von Heesen has resigned as coach of DSC Arminia Bielefeld following Sunday's 1-0 defeat at FC Bayern München, with his No2 Frank Geideck taking charge.

Long-term deal
Von Heesen had been due to leave the Bundesliga club at the end of the season, but with the team without a win since 11 November, the 45-year-old former 1. FC Saarbrücken trainer has chosen to go now. His decision has allowed Geideck to assume control with immediate effect and with the security of a long-term contract.

Change needed
The 39-year-old Geideck will lead a side sitting eleventh in the German table, three points off the relegation places. Von Heesen, who was in the third season of his second managerial tenure at the 'Alm', said: "There has been too much unrest in recent days and we wanted to find a quick solution." He had previously occupied the hot seat during the 1998/99 campaign. His successor first joined Arminia in 1972 as a player.
