S.S. Lazio reached the Italian Cup semi-finals at the expense of AS Bari on Tuesday as a goalless second leg ensured the Roman side advanced on the back of their 2-1 first-leg success.
Serie B side Bari were marginally superior to their top-flight opponents in a tight first half which offered few chances to score. Lazio goalkeeper Luca Marchegiani made the only save worthy of the name in the 34th minute, denying Bari midfield player Jaime Valdes.
Lazio hang on
Despite the introduction of Claudio López and Stefano Fiore in the second half, Bari looked the stronger of the two sides, particularly in the final 20 minutes when they took charge of the match. A goal would have been enough to see Bari progress on away goals, but Roberto Mancini's side hung on.
The Lazio coach said of the game: "We certainly didn't play a great match. We had two or three chances, but wasted them. We'll have to change things round a bit if we're going to go further in the competition."
Lazio will know face the winners of Wednesday's tie between AS Roma and Vicenza Calcio. When asked about the prospect of facing city rivals Roma in the semi-final, Mancini answered: "
To play Roma in the last four would be great. Any derby is a big occasion."
