Feyenoord defender Serginho Greene be out of action for the remainder of the calendar year after rupturing cruciate knee ligaments at the weekend.
Greene had to be carried from the pitch on a stretcher after sustaining the injury when he fell awkwardly ten minutes from the end of the goalless Eredivisie draw against AZ Alkmaar. Tests on Monday revealed a tear so serious that the Rotterdam club’s medical staff have ruled him out of action until the winter break of next season.
"I have never been seriously injured before, so it shocked me," said the 24-year-old. "But there's nothing I can do about it, so I'll just have to make sure I get stay as fit and strong as possible." Greene has been a regular member of Erwin Koeman's rearguard, making 22 league and six UEFA Cup appearances for Feyenoord this term. He has also worn the captain's armband in the absence of Theo Lucius.
