Cyprus round-up: Omonia's perfect day

Omonia Nicosia FC's Rainer Rauffmann scored six as his team beat Alki Larnaca FC 11-1 to go top.

A six-goal performance from Omonia Nicosia FCC's German-born striker Rainer Rauffmann capped his side's perfect weekend, as they secured a club record 11-1 victory against seemingly relegation-bound Alki Larnaca FC and went top of the Cypriot first division.

Rauffmann takes over
Within 24 minutes Omonia were 2-0 up through ex-Alki players Zoran Stepjanovic and Ljubisa Kekic, and Rauffmann took over with a treble before the break, scoring a 33rd-minute penalty before adding two more within ten minutes. His other goals came on 50, 59 and 81 minutes, Costas Kaiafas, Haris Nicolaou and Elias Charalambous also on target for Omonia, and Savvas Damianou scoring Alki's consolation on a ground where they won 5-1 last season.

APOEL held
Champions APOEL Nicosia FC conceded first place as they were held 1-1 at Nea Salamis FC. APOEL captain Kostakis Malekkos had given his side the lead from the penalty spot early on in the first half but Pambis Andreou equalised on 53 minutes after pouncing on a loose ball.

Ketsbaia the hero
Georgian player Timuri Ketsbaia was the hero for Anorthosis Famagusta FC as his powerful 89th-minute deflected shot saw his side keep in touch with the league leaders with a crucial 2-1 victory away to Apollon Limassol FC. Vassos Melanarkitis had given Apollon the lead on 40 minutes with a back-heel but Anorthosis were on level terms seconds before the interval as the club's top scorer Marios Neophytou latched onto a loose ball to score. The game looked set to finish in a draw until Ketsbaia unleashed a powerful shot, which deflected off Arsen Marjan into the goal.

In contention
Nicos Andronicou's Olympiakos Nicosia FC stayed in contention for a UEFA Cup berth by narrowly beating Dighenis Morphou FC 1-0. Marios Themistocelous's precise strike on 53 minutes from a great Josef Kozlej pass was enough to see off a gritty Dighenis side who had Armenian international Artur Voskanyan sent off in the 49th minute.

AEL move up
Elsewhere, AEL Limassol FC moved up the league standings with a 1-0 victory away to Enosis Neon Paralimniou FC, while AEP Paphos FC overpowered Ethnikos Achnas FC 2-0 and AEK Larnaca FC moved up a gear in the second half to score all their goals as they easily beat Aris Limassol FC 4-0 to leave the defeated side still bottom with a solitary point from 17 games.
