Cyprus round-up: APOEL close the gap

Champions APOEL Nicosia FC moved to within a point of leaders Omonia Nicosia FC with another win.

Division A champions APOEL Nicosia FC moved to within a point of leaders Omonia Nicosia FC with a narrow 1-0 victory at Apollon Limassol FC whilst Omonia could only draw 0-0 at home to Ethnikos Achnas FC.

Unbeaten run
APOEL preserved their unbeaten record thanks to a 18th-minute goal from former Greece international Marinos Ouzounides, who was left unmarked in the Apollon penalty area to meet a free-kick from Kostakis Malekkos and beat goalkeeper Sofronis Avgoustis.

Home pressure
The home side pressed hard for an equaliser, with both Marjan Savu and Christis Theophilou going close, but APOEL held on for a win that increased the pressure on Omonia.

Kocic keeps Omonia out
The leaders were frustrated at the GSP stadium in Nicosia, as Achnas goalkeeper Aleksandar Kocic produced a string of fine saves to keep the home side at bay. Rainer Marcos Rauffmann, Ljubisa Kekic, Lefteris Kontolefteros and Vesko Mihajlovic were all denied by the Yugoslavian goalkeeper, while at the other end both Nicholas Dikoume and Borje Gjurev went close to stealing a surprise win for Achnas, but in the end both teams had to settle for a point.

Resounding victory
Meanwhile, Anorthosis Famagusta FC maintained their title challenge with a comprehensive 7-1 win at second-bottom side Alki Larnaca FC. Marios Neophytou and Timuri Ketsbaia each scored twice, with Vedran Pelic, Christos Kotsonis and Radoslaw Michaslki also on target for a win that left Anorthosis just three points behind the leaders.

Exciting game
Olympiakos Nicosia FC remained in fourth place with a 3-2 home victory against AEL Limassol FC. AEL took the lead after 13 minutes with a Georgos Konstanti penalty, but Olympiakos rallied and two goals from new signing Kostas Elias and one from Josef Kozlej gave the home side a 3-1 lead. AEL had captain Ermogenis Christophi dismissed on the hour, but a goal from Tommis Chrysostomou six minutes from time ensured a tense finish.

AEP win
Elsewhere, AEP Paphos FC won 3-1 at home to Dighenis Morphou FC with Zenzo Moyo scoring twice, while Nea Salamis FC slipped further into relegation trouble with a 2-2 draw at bottom side Aris Limassol FC, who secured only their second point of the season. Enosis Neon Paralimniou FC moved out of the relegation zone with an impressive 4-1 win against AEK Larnaca FC, with Demos Goumenos also getting two goals.
