FBK Kaunas have won the Lithuanian Super Cup for the first time after a 1-0 defeat of cup holders FK Sūduva in the showcase game in Marijampole on Wednesday.
Having lost in the 2003 and 2006 finals, Audrius Ksanavičius secured the club's first Super Cup success with the only goal of the game after 78 minutes, cutting into the box to fire the ball into the far corner of the net. "I risked a bit fielding some young players, but I am happy with their performances," said Kaunas's Bulgarian coach Angel Cervenkov. Both teams fielded weakened sides as they meet again in the league on Saturday. That could be the Cervenkov's last game at Kaunas after joining the Lithuanian champions in April. Kaunas owner Vladimir Romanov is set to take the coach to one of his other clubs, Heart of Midlothian FC, while allowing FC MTZ-RIPO Minsk coach Andrei Zygmantovitch to replace him at Kaunas.
