Georgian striker Shota Arveladze faces a race to be fit for Levante UD's opening match of the season at RCD Mallorca on 26 August after suffering a knee cartilage problem during training.
The 34-year-old tore his meniscus at the Spanish club’s pre-season base in Soria and will travel to Amsterdam for surgery tomorrow after undergoing extensive tests with Dr José Nebot. Arveladze joined Levante on a one-year contract with the option of a further term from AZ Alkmaar last month, having previously played for FC Dinamo Tbilisi, Trabzonspor, AFC Ajax and Rangers FC. Now retired from international football, he struck 27 goals in 63 appearances for his country.
