Porto prevail against Sporting

FC Porto took an important step towards winning a hat-trick of Liga titles as they beat Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-0 in the first 'clássico' of the campaign.

FC Porto took an important early step towards winning a hat-trick of Liga titles as they beat the runners-up for the last two seasons, Sporting Clube de Portugal, 1-0 in the first 'clássico' of the campaign.

Raúl Meireles winner
Both teams won their opening match last week but only one could keep that run up at the Estádio do Dragão tonight. The first half was intense but goalless. Porto took the lead eight minutes after the interval when Sporting goalkeeper Vladimir Stojković was penalised for picking up an Anderson Polga back-pass and Raul Meireles blasted the ball past the visiting wall after a touch from Lucho González. Sporting pressed for an equaliser, but Porto held on.

Marítimo top
The only other team on two wins are CS Marítimo, who came away from Boavista FC with a 2-0 victory. CF Estrela da Amadora are third on four points after defeating A. Naval 1° Maio 3-1 but SL Benfica lost more ground on Saturday as they drew for the second time, held 0-0 at home by Vitória SC.
