The final day of the Tippeligaen season produced the biggest shock of the campaign when IK Start were relegated to the second tier of Norwegian football.
Touted as potential champions before a ball had been kicked, Start have to face up to life in the 1. Division after going down 4-1 at FC Lyn Oslo. Even the arrival of Swedish coach Benny Lennartsson with seven rounds to play was not enough to keep the Kristiansand club up, and he has made way for former Odd Grenland boss Arne Sandstø. Odd are the main benefactors of Start's demise, having been seven points behind their rivals with three games to play. Nine points from three 2-0 wins mean they will play-off against FK Bodø/Glimt for a place among the élite next term.
Having ended a 44-yearwait for a national title, SK Brann will represent Norway in next year's qualifiers for the UEFA Champions League. Stabæk IFand Viking FK will compete in the UEFA Cup, where they will be joined by the winners of the Lillestrøm SK-FK Haugesund Norwegian Cup final. Should Lillestrøm lose, they will enter the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
