Newcastle United FC's English Premiership title hopes were dealt a severe blow on Sunday as goals from Wayne Rooney and David Unsworth gave Everton FC a 2-1 win at Goodison Park.
Victory would have taken Newcastle to within three points of joint-leaders Arsenal FC and Manchester United FC at the summit - but Sir Bobby Robson's men were chasing the game from the 18th minute when Rooney, so impressive for England in their UEFA EURO 2004™ victory against Turkey in midweek, headed the home side into the lead.
Laurent Robert unleashed a ferocious equaliser moments before half-time but Unsworth kept his nerve to convert a 65th-minute penalty for Everton after Kevin Campbell had been felled in the area by Jonathan Woodgate, ultimately earning his side three points to lift them above city rivals Liverpool FC into fifth.
