Serie A's bottom club Cagliari Calcio have sacked Nedo Sonetti, only a week after they persuaded the 66-year-old coach to rethink his decision to resign.
Third time unlucky
Sonetti had returned to Cagliari for a third spell at the helm in mid-November, replacing Marco Giampaolo, but his stay has proved short-lived. The Sardinian team remain at the foot of Italy's top flight and now intend to appoint another former manager, the 43-year-old Davide Ballardini.
Cagliari president Massimo Cellino said: "I am sorry about Sonetti but I could see the ghosts of our relegation in 2000." His side had collected just one point since the arrival six weeks ago of Sonetti, who had previously been in charge in 2001/02 and 2005/06. Giampaolo was thought to have been offered his job back when Sonetti first stepped down, then resumed control of first-team affairs between 19 and 20 December.
