FC Porto failed to claim the Super Liga after being held to a 1-1 draw at Associação Académica de Coimbra.
Raúl Oliveira opened the scoring for the home side on 35 minutes as Porto, fresh from reaching the UEFA Cup final after overcoming S.S. Lazio last week, were kept at bay by some fine goalkeeping from Pedro Roma. Académica, who are third from bottom in the league, held out until the 75th minute when striker Derlei brought the sides level.
Champions League qualification
Porto, however, will become champions next weekend if second-placed SL Benfica lose to Sporting Clube de Portugal and they win at home to SC Santa Clara. However, Benfica secured qualification for next season's UEFA Champions League with a 3-1 win at SC Braga on Saturday. All the goals came in the first half, through Geovanni, Zlatko Zahovic and Nuno Gomes.
Boavista put the disappointment of their UEFA Cup elimination by Celtic FC behind them with a 3-0 victory over Vitória Guimarães. Yuri scored twice in the first half and Silva added a third at the beginning of the second half. Pedro Mendes scored a consolation goal on 57 minutes.
Sporting came from a goal behind to draw 1-1 at home against SC Beira-Mar, with both goals coming early in the second half. Fary scored for the visitors only for Jardel to equalise from the penalty spot.
FC Paços de Ferreira and CD National played out a 3-3 draw, with Paulo Assunção scoring the goal of the game. The midfield player evaded six players in an amazing dribble that took him almost the length of the pitch before he put the ball in the net.
Moreirense FC moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over Gil Vicente FC while CF Belenenses defeated CD Marítimo 3-1, with Brazilian Mauro scoring twice. União de Leiria won 2-0 at Varzim SC and Santa Carla gained three valuable points in their fight against relegation after a 1-0 win against Vitória Setúbal.
