Bacau banking on Popovici

Cristian Popovici has been appointed the new coach of Divizia A side FCM Bacau.

Cristian Popovici has been appointed the new coach of Divizia A side FCM Bacau.

Special dispensation
The 35-year-old coach spent last season with third division team Aerostar Bacau, a satellite club for Bacau. Popovici, a former Bacau player, required special permission from the Romanian Football Federation to take up the position, as he only has a second coaching degree to his name and not the first, which is required for top-flight clubs.

Local ties
Popovici was appointed by Dumitru Sechelariu, the club's honorary president and also mayor of Bacau, who said that he had decided to appoint a local coach, who had strong links to the team and city and who was a former player.

'We achieved nothing'
"In the last two years, we had several big-name trainers with big reputations, but we achieved nothing," said Sechelariu. Former Romanian international Ilie Dumitrescu was in charge of the club last season as Bacau narrowly escaped relegation from the top flight in the final round of matches.

'A very big challenge'
"I'm very confident," said Popvici. "The chance to coach a team like Bacau represents a very big challenge. In the last round of [last season's] championship, when we won and avoided the play-off, I coordinated the preparation and led the team on the field. I was very satisfied with the way the boys moved and played on the field and I’m ready for the battle."

'Full support'
"It's too early to speak about our objectives because I am not sure yet which players want to stay at the club so we don't know whom we will work with," said Popovici. "The president gave me full support and confidence, so I will have to prove I deserve to lead the team."
