Pedro Emanuel plots new path at Porto

FC Porto defender Pedro Emanuel has ended his playing career at 34 after being named the Liga double-winners' Under-17 coach, the Angolan-born player sure "this is the perfect time to say goodbye".

Former FC Porto captain Pedro Emanuel has decided to put an end to his playing career at 34 after being named as the Portuguese double-winners' new Under-17 coach, with the Angolan-born defender sure "this is the perfect time to say goodbye".

New challenge
Perdo Emanuel joined Porto in 2002 after winning a league title and a Portuguese Cup with their neighbours, Boavista FC. At the Estádio do Dragão he helped them win the 2002/03 UEFA Cup, the 2003/04 UEFA Champions League, five more Liga titles and another three Portuguese Cups. Porto won a domestic double in 2008/09 with the 34-year-old then being offered a job as U17 coach from next season. "This is the perfect time to say goodbye, after winning the league and the cup," he said. "Now it is time for a new challenge. I am thrilled with the opportunity to stay at the club and to lead the U17 team next year." Porto start their 2009/10 UEFA Champions League campaign in the group stage.
