Machlas back in Greece

Nikos Machlas has returned to Greece to join Iraklis FC hours after the cancellation of his AFC Ajax contract.

Reunited with Gerard
The 30-year-old Greek international forward has signed a one-year contract with Iraklis with the option of a further two seasons. He will play under the man he calls his "footballing father", Dutch coach Enge Gerard, who gave Machlas his break aged 18 at OFI Crete FC.

Golden Boot honour
Machlas left OFI in 1996 to join Dutch side SBV Vitesse, where he was the ESM Golden Shoe winner in 1997/98 with 34 goals in 32 games, before moving to Ajax in 1999. He won a Dutch domestic double in 2001/02 but then fell out of coach Ronald Koeman's plans and was loaned to Sevilla FC in January 2003.
