Article body
Sivasspor made history by winning for the first time in UEFA club competition to advance to the third round of the UEFA Intertoto Cup. New and old alike were celebrating progress as seasoned campaigners Rosenborg BK and European debutantsFC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast also confirmed their places in the next round.
Rosenborg BK 4-0 FK Ekranas (agg: 7-1)
Yssouf Koné scored twice to put the seal on a comprehensive second-leg performance by the Norwegian outfit. Didier Konan Ya struck the only goal of the first period on 16 minutes when he headed in a free-kick to increase Rosenborg's aggregate lead over the Lithuanian side. Steffen Iversen then pounced on a rebound three minutes after the restart, before Koné nodded in a corner four minutes later and rounded off proceedings in stoppage time after being played through by Albert Berbatovci.
OB Odense 2-0 FC TPS Turku (agg: 4-1)
Odense dominated from the off against their visitors from Finland and were a goal to the good after 20 minutes when Björn Runström crossed for the unmarked Baye Djiby Fall to score from close range. Five minutes after half-time, the Danish hosts all but decided the tie and again Fall was the scorer, heading in Thomas Helveg's right-wing cross. Odense play English Premier League side Aston Villa FC in the third round.
Panionios GSS 3-1 OFK Beograd (agg: 3-2)
Panionios recovered from last week's 1-0 reverse in Serbia to advance to the third round. Had it not been for three shots that struck the post, the Greek Super League team would have won by a greater margin. Panionios went ahead in the 25th minute, Georgios Barkoglou finding the net with a close-range finish after a back-heeled assist by Lampros Choutos. Choutos got in on the act in first-half added time with a right-footed shot following a swift counterattack. OFK drew level on aggregate in the 55th minute, William Artur De Oliveira's free-kick taking a deflection en route to the top corner, but the locals hit back six minutes later when Choutos claimed his second of the evening from the penalty spot.
FC Etzella Ettelbrück 1–1 FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast (agg: 1-8)
Following a 7-0 victory in the first leg, Saturn coach Boris Ignatiev shuffled his pack to give several fringe players a chance to impress. After a goalless first half, the hosts from Luxembourg reduced the deficit to six goals when Claudio Da Luz headed in a corner after 71 minutes. However, that advantage was short-lived as Leonid Kovel equalised for the Russian club with a curling free-kick. Saturn go on to face Bundesliga outfit VfB Stuttgart for a place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
Sivasspor 1-0 OFK Grbalj (agg: 3-2)
Mamadou Diallo's goal seven minutes from time gave Sivasspor their maiden win in UEFA club competition. The Turkish side should have been in front sooner but squandered several chances, Pini Balali and Mehmet Yıldız proving particularly wasteful. Montenegro's Grbalj were more resolute after the restart, leaving little room for Sivasspor to manoeuvre, but their resistance was finally broken when defender Diallo headed in İbrahim Dağaşan's free-kick. "Today we played good football although we wasted many opportunities," said Sivasspor coach Bülent Uygun. "Nevertheless, it is nice to win at home in front of our fans. Next week, we play [SC] Braga here and with their support our aim is to qualify for the UEFA Cup. We have the strength and ambition to achieve this."
FC Shakhtyor Soligorsk 0-0 SK Sturm Graz (agg: 0-2)
Belarussian representatives Shakhtyor Soligorsk were unable to reduce the two-goal deficit incurred during the first leg in Austria last week. Sturm's reward for victory is a tie against Budapest Honvéd FC who overcame FK Teplice on away goals on Saturday.
SC Tavriya Simferopol 3-1 FC Tiraspol (agg: 3-1)
Goalless from the first leg, Tavriya made home advantage count in Ukraine to see off the challenge of their Moldovan opponents. Mykhailo Fomenko's side were ahead after just ten minutes thanks to Zeljko Ljubenovic's strike from just outside the penalty area. Tavriya continued to push forward and were rewarded when Volodymyr Homenyuk found the target before half-time. Vasil Gigiadze then added Simferopol's third after the break, latching on to a pass from Denys Golaydo. Vitalie Bulat registered a consolation for Tiraspol in added time. Tavriya must now overcome Ligue 1 representatives Stade Rennais FC if they are to take their place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Cup.
