Delight for FCK and Rangers

Football Europe round-up: FC København and Rangers FC warmed up for their European meeting with wins.

Pettersson winner
Hosts Brøndby went into the match on top of the Danish Super League but FCK, who are tied 1-1 with Rangers going into Wednesday's home leg, secured victory when substitute Jörgen Pettersson scored on 66 minutes. Unbeaten Esbjerg fB are the new leaders thanks to a 3-2 win at home to Aalborg BK.

Five for Rangers
Rangers, meanwhile, trailed twice against Hibernian FC - and saw their opponents miss a penalty at 2-2 - before retaining their 100 per cent record by running out 5-2 winners. Celtic FC who lead their own Champions League third qualifying round tie against MTK Hungária FC 4-0, remain two points behind Rangers after beating Partick Thistle FC 2-1.

Basel buoyant
FC Basel may be in the UEFA Cup rather than Champions League this term, but their domestic form remains buoyant as they made it seven Swiss Super League wins out of seven with a 6-0 triumph against Servette FC. Christian Giménez scored twice, with Marco Streller, Scott Chipperfield, Murat Yakin and Hervé Tum also on target. Fellow UEFA Cup contenders BSC Young Boys remain six points behind after a 2-1 Berne derby win against FC Thun, while Grasshopper-Club, who go into the away leg of their Champions League encounter with AEK Athens FC leading 1-0, overcame FC St. Gallen by the same scoreline.

KR close to title
Arnar Gunnlaugsson's injury comeback for Icelandic Premier League leaders KR Reykjavík was dramatic as he scored a hat-trick in the potential title decider against Fylkir. Gunnlaugsson had been out for two games, but his treble gave KR a 4-0 victory to move the defending champions four points clear with three games to go. It was Fylkir's second straight defeat. KR could be champions as early as next Monday if they beat Grindavík and Fylkir lose to ÍA Akranes.

Legia joy
KP Polonia Warszawa's nightmare home record against Legia Warszawa continues after a 1-0 defeat - extending the visitors' unbeaten record at their neighbours to 53 years. Legia defender Marek Jozwiak was sent off on 40 minutes for deliberate handball but Artur Boruc saved the resultant Igor Golaszewski penalty, and with 16 minutes left Aleksandar Vukovic scored to decide the match. Ekstraklasa title-holders Wisla Kraków are top with three wins out of three after beating Górnik Zabrze 2-0, while newcomers GKS Górnik Leczna remain unbeaten in second, defeating UEFA Cup competitors Wisla Plock 3-1.

Barry crisis
Reigning Welsh Premiership champions Barry Town AFC's players and manager Kenny Brown boycotted their fixture against Connah's Quay Nomads FC due to the financially troubled club's decision to revert to part-time status. Brown, whose squad have not been paid for three months, said his players had only been informed of the switch on Friday evening. A shareholders' EGM will be held on 1 September. Elsewhere, Bangor City FC stayed top with a 5-0 win against Welshpool Town FC.

Sliema held
Maltese Premier League side Sliema Wanderers FC opened their new campaign by racing into a 2-0 lead against Marsaxlokk FC inside 28 minutes - only for Petr Bartes and Nikolai Slavtchev to pull the score back to 2-2. Meanwhile FC Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt are the surprise leaders in Romania after three matches after beating FC Apulum Unirea 3-0.
