UEFA Europa League semi-finalists Liverpool FC have signed England youth midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Charlton Athletic FC with the 18-year-old moving at the end of the season.

The two clubs have agreed an initial fee close to €2m with further potential payments depending on domestic and international appearances. Liverpool's managing director Christian Purslow said: "Jonjo is an exciting young England international. His signing is part of our long-term strategic recruitment plan."

Shelvey became Charlton's youngest player with his debut against Barnsley FC aged 16 years and 59 days in April 2008. The following year he represented England at the UEFA European Under-17 Championship finals, by which stage he was a club regular. His current team are competing for promotion to England's second tier while Liverpool welcome Club Atlético de Madrid to Anfield on Thursday aiming to overturn a 1-0 deficit and reach the UEFA Europa League final.
