Chelsea FC's stuttering run of Premier League form continued with a 1-1 draw at Newcastle United FC before Tottenham Hotspur FC left it late to defeat Liverpool FC.

Knowing victory would have enabled them to reclaim top spot on goal difference from Manchester United FC, Chelsea fell behind inside six minutes at a snowy St James' Park when a mix-up between Alex and Petr Čech allowed Andy Carroll in for his ninth goal of the campaign.

The visitors enjoyed the majority of possession thereafter and went into the break on level terms, Salomon Kalou finishing off a slick move with a shot that took a sizeable deflection off Danny Simpson.

Chelsea trail United by two points after a run of just one win in five league games, while they are four clear of fifth-placed Tottenham, who recovered to win 2-1 after falling behind to Martin Škrtel's 42nd-minute strike.

Unfortunately for the Slovakia defender, he was also involved in the equaliser on 65 minutes, turning in Luka Modrić's low cross moments after Jermain Defoe had blasted a penalty wide for Tottenham. With the game in added time, Aaron Lennon then ran on to a ball down the middle and beat Pepe Reina.
