Malta captain Michael Mifsud celebrated his return to full-time football after a spell in the wilderness with a hat-trick on his debut for Qormi FC on Saturday.

Out of contract since leaving Valletta FC in the summer, the 29-year-old striker looked set for a move to the United States or Korea Republic to continue his professional career. But while he was close to signing for local side Floriana FC at the end of January, he opted on Friday to spend the remainder of the season with Qormi.

The former 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Lillestrøm SK, Coventry City FC and Barnsley FC forward hit the ground running a day later with three goals in a 4-1 defeat of Birkirkara FC. "I am very happy today," Mifsud told UEFA.com. "Three goals on my debut for my new club clearly demonstrated I am still the Michael Mifsud everyone knows."

Mifsud continued to add to his international haul of 25 goals from 78 games during the autumn, appearing in Malta's first four UEFA EURO 2012 qualifiers, and is now looking to lift sixth-ranked Qormi up the Premier League table. "I want to win things with my new club and my immediate target is this season's Maltese Cup," he said.
