Juventus and Mirandés march on

Juventus stepped up their quest for a league and cup double by easing past AS Roma 3-0 in their Coppa Italia quarter-final while CD Mirandés reached the last four of the Copa del Rey with a dramatic victory.

The Bianconeri – the unbeaten leaders of Serie A – were in control from the off as Emanuele Giaccherini followed up his first league goal for the club at the weekend by bursting on to Andrea Barzagli's through ball and finishing calmly six minutes in.

Alessandro Del Piero added a stunning second on the half-hour mark by thumping in from 20 metres off the underside of the bar. Roma's quest ended as Erik Lamela was sent off before Simon Kjær diverted Fabio Quagliarella's cross into his own net. AC Milan or S.S. Lazio await Antonio Conte's men in the last four.

In Spain, RCD Espanyol took a precarious 3-2 first-leg lead to a Mirandés side that had already accounted for Villarreal CF and Real Racing Club in the Copa del Rey, but they added to their advantage when Rui Fonte struck in the first minute of the second half.

However, the Segunda B Grupo 2 leaders levelled 12 minutes later when Pablo Infante's deflected shot sneaked in off the far post and César Fernández headed in an added-time second to complete an away-goals triumph. The Rojillos – only the second side from the third tier to reach the semi-finals – will face RCD Mallorca or Athletic Club next.

Cardiff City AFC will play Manchester City FC or Liverpool FC in the English League Cup final after beating fellow second division side Crystal Palace FC 3-1 on penalties. Anthony Gardner, who scored the only goal of the first leg, headed past his own goalkeeper to give Cardiff an early lead and level the aggregate score. The visitors forced extra time, though, despite the second-half dismissal of Patrick McCarthy only to fall in the shoot-out.
