Győri ETO FC have ended a 30-year wait for the Hungarian top-flight title after a 1-0 victory against Ferencvárosi TC saw them go ten points clear with three games to go.

Dániel Völgyi's penalty was enough to see off Ferencváros, and with second-placed Videoton FC losing 2-1 at Debreceni VSC earlier in the day, the title is on its way to Gyor for the first time since 1983. It is their fourth title in all, though the north-west club had not finished higher than third – where they came in last term – since 1985.

Under Attila Pintér, Győr have led the way almost all this season. Beaten 4-1 on the opening day by champions Debrecen, they went on a 22-match unbeaten run before back-to-back defeats knocked them off their stride. But only briefly, and with Videoton and MTK Budapest unable to sustain a challenge, Győr wrapped up the title with room to spare.

"I congratulate everyone, not just for the success but because it was achieved despite criticism of us from some quarters," said Pintér. "I would like to thank the owner for always believing in me and trusting me. Regarding today's game, Ferencváros have signed many good players, but we knew how they wanted to play against us and we successfully prepared for it. We deserved this success."
