AS Monaco FC have signed midfielder Jérémy Toulalan from Málaga CF in a deal reported to be worth an initial €5m.

Toulalan, who helped the southern Spanish club reach the last eight of the UEFA Champions League last season, has accepted a two-year contract with Monaco with the option of a further 12 months in the Mediterranean principality.

The former FC Nantes and Olympique Lyonnais player made 44 Liga appearances in two campaigns with Málaga, who last term finished sixth in the top flight and lost a UEFA Champions League quarter-final to Borussia Dortmund – with Toulalan featuring in both legs of that tie.

The 29-year-old, capped 36 times by France but not since the 2010 FIFA World Cup, could line up alongside fellow midfield recruit João Moutinho for Ligue 1 newcomers Monaco, who are coached by Claudio Ranieri.
