Bayer 04 Leverkusen were unable to close the gap on Bundesliga leaders FC Bayern München as they suffered a first home league loss of the season, against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Though hoping to move within four points of Bayern, things did not go to plan for Sami Hyypiä's men at the BayArena as they fell 1-0. Jan Rosenthal crashed a 12th-minute header against the post for the visitors, who gained the breakthrough in the second half when Marco Russ headed in Sebastian Jung's 61st-minute free-kick. Eintracht keeper Kevin Trapp was kept busy late on as second-placed Leverkusen pushed, though Joselu missed an added-time penalty for Frankfurt, leaving Bayern with a seven-point cushion.

Earlier in the day sixth-ranked FC Schalke 04 returned to winning ways after back-to-back defeats by seeing off lowly SC Freiburg in Gelsenkirchen. Jefferson Farfán's corner struck the body of Nicolas Höfler and deflected past Oliver Baumann to put the hosts ahead a minute before the interval and Farfán sealed the 2-0 victory in the 67th minute, converting from the spot after a foul on Max Meyer.
