Tired Garde to leave Lyon

"I really needed a break," said Rémi Garde after announcing his departure as Olympique Lyonnais coach following their crucial trip to OGC Nice on Saturday.

Rémi Garde is to leave his role as Olympique Lyonnais coach this summer after three campaigns in charge.

Garde, who may remain with the club in another capacity, was named as Claude Puel's successor in 2011, lifting the 2012 French Cup and this season reaching the League Cup final and the UEFA Europa League's last eight. In his final match at the helm on Saturday, Garde's Lyon must win at OGC Nice to ensure a fifth-place finish and UEFA Europa League football next term – they currently have a one-point lead over Olympique de Marseille.

"I won't be on the bench next season," the 48-year-old former France midfielder said after confirming the end of his first head coaching assignment, which followed a previous stint as Lyon assistant. "I really needed a break. I'm not sure what I'll do next. I just need to take a break for now."
