Chelsea reward Čech with new contract

Chelsea FC have announced that goalkeeper Petr Čech has signed a new contract. The 30-year-old, who is currently training with the Czech Republic squad ahead of UEFA EURO 2012, has committed himself to the London club until June 2016.

Čech joined the Blues in 2004 from Stade Rennais FC and was an ever-present in this season's triumphant UEFA Champions League campaign, crucially denying FC Bayern München's Ivica Olić and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the final shoot-out to earn his side the trophy.

"I am really happy to be part of this great club for another four years," said Čech. "I hope the next four years will be as successful as the last eight years have been at the club."

Chief executive Ron Gourlay added: "Chelsea fully appreciates the highly significant contribution Petr has made to the most successful period in the club's history, and it is very important to our aim of continuing this level of achievement that he has committed himself to the club until 2016."

Čech has played more games for Chelsea than any other non-English player, making 369 appearances and keeping 178 clean sheets, while picking up three Premier League medals and four FA Cups along the way.
