Pochettino installed as Tottenham manager

Tottenham Hotspur FC have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager on a five-year contract. 

The former Argentinian international succeeds Tim Sherwood, who had been at the helm since Spurs parted company with André Villas-Boas in December but departed the north London club a fortnight ago after guiding them to a sixth-place finish in the Premier League.

The 42-year-old Pochettino resigned as Southampton FC boss to fill the void at White Hart Lane and will take his new charges into next season's UEFA Europa League play-offs.

"This is a club with tremendous history and prestige and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity to be its head coach," said Pochettino in a statement on the Tottenham website. "There is an abundance of top-class talent at the club and I am looking forward to starting work with the squad."

Pochettino has impressed in his first spell in England, steering Southampton away from the threat of relegation last term having taken over in January. He subsequently led the Saints to eighth spot this season. Pochettino's only other previous coaching role was with RCD Espanyol, from 2009 to 2012.

Joining Pochettino are Jesús Pérez (assistant head coach), Miguel D'Agostino (first team coach) and Toni Jiménez (goalkeeper coach), his staff at Southampton and Espanyol. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy added: "In Mauricio I believe we have a head coach who, with his high energy and attacking football, will embrace the style of play we associate with our club."
