Swansea flummox United, Arsenal start with win

Manchester United FC went down 2-1 at home to Swansea City AFC in Louis van Gaal's first competitive game, but Arsenal FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC enjoyed better luck.

• New captain Wayne Rooney equalised, but Louis van Gaal's first game as Manchester United FC manager ended in defeat, Ki Sung-Yong and Gylfi Sigurdsson on target for Swansea City AFC at Old Trafford.

• Arsenal FC made a winning start thanks to a 90th-minute goal from Aaron Ramsey which completed a 2-1 comeback success against Crystal Palace FC, who went ahead through Brede Hangeland.

• Summer signing Eric Dier's late goal earned new Tottenham Hotspur FC coach Mauricio Pochettino a 1-0 win at West Ham United FC; Spurs' Kyle Naughton and the Hammers' James Collins were both sent off.

• Hull City won at promoted Queens Park Rangers FC; fellow UEFA Europa League contenders Everton FC were pegged back by newcomers Leicester City FC, Chris Wood equalising late.

• Aston Villa FC secured their first away win since 1 January, Andreas Weimann's goal enough to beat Stoke City FC.

• In their first game under Alan Irvine, West Bromwich Albion FC were denied by Sunderland AFC, despite Saido Berahino striking twice.
