Visitors make merry in Malta

Malta 2-5 Bosnia-Herzegovina Sergej Barbarez scored and Mirko Hrgović and Zlatan Muslimović both struck twice in an entertaining encounter.

Bosnia-Herzegovina began their UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying campaign in style as they struck five goals in Malta - the most they have managed in a senior competitive away game.

Exchange of goals
The visitors broke the deadlock in the Group C encounter after four minutes when Mladen Bartolović crossed from the right and Sergej Barbarez volleyed in with his right foot from the middle of the area. But Malta equalised almost immediately with a tremendous long-range volley from Jamie Pace. Within four minutes, though, Bosnia-Herzegovina led again thanks to Mirko Hrgović's powerful drive.

Visitors break away
Michael Mifsud almost fashioned another leveller on 27 minutes when he fired just past the far post but the next goal went to the away side moments before the break, Hrgović registering from close range. Hrgović turned supplier for the fourth early in the second half, feeding Zlatan Muslimović who finished with a right-footed shot into the bottom corner from eleven metres.

Victory clinched
Striker Muslimović added his second two minutes later, providing another cool finish with his right foot from slightly further out. Mifsud managed to get his name on the scoresheet with three minutes left, but it was only a consolation for a well-beaten Malta team who now travel to Turkey on Wednesday while Bosnia-Herzegovina welcome Hungary fresh from a heavy defeat at home to Norway.
