Switzerland booked their place in the finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship on Wednesday night with a 4-2 aggregate win over Ukraine.

Ukraine given hope
The Swiss ran out 2-1 winners on the night at the Brügglifeld stadium in Aarau. After a 2-1 home defeat in the first leg, Ukraine were given hope of turning the tie around when Armen Akopian gave them a 63rd-minute lead.

Swiss back on terms
However the Swiss were soon back on terms, Ricardo Cabanas stroking home a penalty on 70 minutes. A further penalty from Alexander Frei eight minutes later secured victory for the hosts.

Coach delighted
Switzerland coach Bernard Challandes was delighted with the result. "I am very proud of my team," he said. "I saw them put up a great fight tonight after they had fallen a goal behind. We came back with two penalties and this victory represents a significant success for Swiss football.

Good future
"I feel like a successful coach although this is not a victory for me but the players," Challandes continued. "This side reaching the European Championship proves that there could be a very good future in store for Swiss football."
