Midfielder Keith Fahey has been forced to withdraw from the Republic of Ireland squad for UEFA EURO 2012 due to injury, with Paul Green now on his way to the finals as his replacement.

Fahey was an injury doubt when he was named in Giovanni Trapattoni's original 23-man selection, with a groin problem forcing him to miss the final games of the season with his club, Birmingham City FC. The Football Association of Ireland (FAI) confirmed on Saturday night, after Ireland's 1-0 friendly win against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the Dublin Arena, that Fahey's injury would force him out of the tournament.

"During the warm-ups at today's match, Keith Fahey felt something not quite right and he was scanned following the match," the FAI said in a statement. "The FAI medical team received the results of the scan which showed unfortunately that his groin strain was persisting.

"The results were discussed with the player and he agreed that he would not recover fully in time for UEFA EURO 2012. As a result he is departing from the squad and Paul Green is being called in."

The 29-year-old Green made his international debut against Paraguay in 2010 and won his tenth and most recent cap against the Czech Republic in a friendly in February 2012.
