UEFA Champions League hopefuls Fenerbahçe SK have further strengthened their squad by securing the signature of Turkish international defender Egemen Korkmaz.

Egemen, 29, was a free agent after getting his contract canceled with Beşiktaş JK earlier this week, and has penned a three-year deal with their city rivals. The announcement comes a day after the club announced the signing of Mehmet Topal.

After spells at Balıkesirspor and Kartalspor, Egemen rose to prominance at Bursaspor, where he made 155 league appearances and earned the captaincy. He moved to Trabzonspor AŞ in 2008/09 and received his first international cap. Egemen joined Beşiktaş last term, featuring 36 times in the league, and made six appearances for his country in UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying.

The capture of Egemen means the first-choice defensive quartet of the Turkish national team – Gökhan Gönül, Bekir İrtegün, Egemen Korkmaz and Hasan Ali Kaldırım – as well as goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, are united at Fenerbahçe.

Meanwhile, reserve goalkeeper Serkan Kırıntılı has extended his contract at the club by two years.
