Setback spurs England

Sven-Göran Eriksson said England were "wanting revenge" after their defeat by France as they prepare to face Switzerland.

Victory vital
Having lost to the reigning European champions in the most dramatic circumstances on Sunday after two added-time goals by Zinedine Zidane, it is important for England to secure their first victory at UEFA EURO 2004™. Defeat would put them out of the tournament.

Scholes fit
Eriksson, who is able to name Paul Scholes in his team after the midfield player shook off an ankle injury, said he was not contemplating the prospect of defeat. "I have never done that before a game," he said, "and I won't start now. But if we make a game with the same intensity as we did on Sunday I am confident that we are going to win.

Revenge wanted
"I am sure the players are a little bit angry and they want revenge. They have been wanting it since Monday morning and they are looking forward to the game. We have to do it. We have two games to sort things out and all our energy is on that."

Weather warning
England trained in sweltering conditions at the Estádio Cidade de Coimbra this afternoon and Eriksson admitted that the weather would not be kind to either side. "It won't be like playing in Newcastle and Manchester that's for sure but we know that in Portugal in June it is warm and it is the same for the Swiss. I hope it's windy at five o'clock tomorrow because we will need that.

Focus needed
"We will attack and be aggressive and try and win the ball early even if the weather is a little bit against us. We have to be motivated and concentrated as we were against France for 90, 93 minutes, if we want to win."

'Fantastic player'
Eriksson is delighted to be able to select Scholes, saying: "He's been criticised for not scoring goals but he's a fantastic player and he makes things happen with his short passes and long passes. Scholes has always been very important to us."

Terry or King
The coach has made up his mind about whether to reinstate the fit-again John Terry in the heart of the defence or stick with Ledley King, who excelled against the French on only his second starting appearance at senior international level. "I have not told the players yet but I am clear which one will play," Eriksson said. Gary Neville will also be included after shaking off a calf injury.
