Pot marvels at classy Netherlands

The Netherlands flexed their muscles in an open training session in Haifa on Saturday evening, with players exuding the necessary attitude and quality required to make an impact at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship.

More than anything, this meticulous workout – choreographed by coach Cor Pot – gave a telling insight into the Jong Oranje's potential starting lineup for their Group B opener against Germany on Thursday.

Goalkeeper Jeroen Zoet was guarded by a four-man back line comprising Ricardo van Rhijn, Stefan de Vrij, Bruno Martins Indi and Daley Blind. Captain Kevin Strootman, Jordy Clasie and Adam Maher combined to form a stylish midfield trio, with lone striker Luuk de Jong flanked by effervescent wingers Georginio Wijnaldum and Ola John.

Pot still has plenty of riches at his disposal, though, with no immediate injury concerns and a day of rest to cherish on Sunday. The Netherlands will train for the final time on Monday morning before making their way to Tel Aviv in preparation for the Germany game.

"My players are very eager and really looking forward to it. The level of quality is very high," said Pot of his intrinsically gifted group of players, containing no fewer than 12 senior internationals. "It is my job to create a team from [this squad]. I am very clear about that. Everyone knows exactly how we are going to play. That will only change if someone gets injured or sick or for tactical reasons.

"If we win, nobody will say anything [negative]. If we lose against Germany, then you find yourself in a situation where there are players on the bench who think they are better than the ones on the pitch. That is what always happens. So we have to make sure we win."
