Bad news for De Boer

Netherlands defender Frank de Boer is "almost certain" not to play again at UEFA EURO 2004™ after confirmation that he is suffering from ankle ligament damage.

Right ankle
The 34-year-old hurt his ankle in the first half of the Netherlands' quarter-final victory over Sweden on Saturday night and a scan today confirmed fears he had damaged a ligament in his right ankle. The news was issued in an official statement by the Royal Netherlands Football Association before training at 6pm today.

MRI scan
It said: "Medical tests this afternoon in Faro through an MRI scan have proved that Frank de Boer is suffering from damage to a ligament in his right ankle. It is almost certain that the player will not be able to play again this tournament." With De Boer retiring from international football after these finals, it is all but certain that he will not be seen in an 'Oranje' shirt again.
