CSKA savour escape, Roma rue win that got away

While PFC CSKA Moskva "kept the intrigue alive" in Group E with a last-gasp equaliser, Vasili Berezutski's added-time strike was a major setback for AS Roma.

CSKA rescue last-gasp draw against Roma to maintain qualifying hopes
Leonid Slutski: "We kept the intrigue in this group alive"
Seydou Doumbia: "Now everything depends on us"
Seydou Keita admits late equaliser is "massive disappointment" for Roma
Next games: Bayern v CSKA, Roma v Manchester City (10 December)

Leonid Slutski, CSKA coach
It's obvious we left ourselves with a difficult task to try and claim victory, but against Roma it is hard to try and get enough of the ball. They put pressure on us, but in the first half we managed to cope with this and created some good chances. Therefore it was really unfortunate that we went into the break behind. I am glad we managed to show character and managed to get an equaliser in the 93rd minute and keep the intrigue in this group alive.

[Pontus] Wernbloom was injured for us and it was a very big risk to play [Bebras] Natcho. He was fantastic as he managed to play the whole 90 minutes. It would have been very risky to play without a defensive midfielder. Maybe it was a risk to play [Aleksandrs] Cauņa, but I thought he did what he was asked to do admirably.

In order to strengthen our attack, we brought on [Georgi] Milanov and [Zoran] Tošić and we tried to use them effectively. I thought we played well. It was not easy. I don't think it was easy for Roma either.

Roman Eremenko, CSKA midfielder
We played very well in the second half and always believed we could get something. Of course it was fantastic to score right at the death. Berezutski probably put in a cross; our players jumped to try and get a head on the ball, but no one got a touch and it ended up in the net.

Roma are a strong side and have some very good players, but we tried to create chances and in the end we managed to score. It was very frustrating to concede, especially as Roma had not created anything up until then. However, we came out for the second half, dominated, and managed to score a deserved equaliser. We always battle to the end and believe we can score. It's very interesting that we've kept our chances of qualifying alive right until the final match of the group.

Aleksandrs Cauņa, CSKA midfielder
Roma played well defensively, keeping a lot of men behind the ball and defending deep. It was difficult to get our attackers or midfielders in positions where they could shoot and we were also unable to test their goalkeeper from distance. However, in the end our pressure, which we had been putting on for the entire second half, told and we scored a very important goal.

It's good that it ended like this and we managed to get a draw. We can continue the battle for a place in the knockout stages and we will go to Munich in good spirits.

It is important that we managed to get a good result and played a good game. We played well against Manchester City at home and did the same away. Today we got a point against Roma. This is very important as we are putting up such a good fight in such a tough group.

Seydou Doumbia, CSKA forward
We played a good match and did everything we could. We fought until the end and managed to get a point. It was fantastic to score so late on; now everything depends on us. We need to get a victory in Munich and then I don't think it will be a problem for us to qualify for the round of 16. If we manage to qualify for the UEFA Europa League it will not be the worst result in the world, but we want more.

Rudi Garcia, Roma coach
I thought we had won the game, but we managed to concede in the last 15 seconds. These 15 seconds changed my view of the game. We had chances to score a second goal, but the most important thing is that everything is in our hands and we don't depend on anyone else's results. If we win our last game, we go through to the next round.

The pressure our opponents put on made us move away from our game plan. We had good opportunities in the first half and if we managed to take them, then the goal in the final seconds would have been academic. However, we will look at the way we conceded. Victory would have been very important for us, as we could have qualified for the knockout stages this evening. However, CSKA were very good today.

Francesco Totti, Roma forward
It was a difficult match and we were supposed to come here to get the win, but the goal they scored in the last seconds was very unexpected for us.

Seydou Keita, Roma midfielder
Of course we are really down at the moment because we were so close to a spot in the knockout stages. I don't know how long was left, maybe only 15 seconds, so that makes things even tougher for us. We need to keep our heads up in these sorts of situations and look ahead to our home encounter with Manchester City. Nevertheless, this is a massive disappointment. We had practically qualified, now we need to fight for the right to move through into the last game. This will be difficult.
