A record tally of more than 8.6 million votes were cast via both UEFA.com and the official @ChampionsLeague Twitter feed since the poll opened on 25 November, smashing the previous high of 6.3 million set last year.

The final XI will be published on UEFA.com and in the January edition of Champions Matchday, the official UEFA Champions League magazine. Before that, you can check out which players the experts – including the likes of Javier Zanetti, Lothar Matthäus and Peter Schmeichel – picked in their star selections.

Users had five formations to choose from – 4-4-2, 3-5-2, 3-4-3, 4-3-3 and 5-3-2 – with four goalkeepers, 12 defenders, 12 midfielders and 12 forwards in contention. The nominees were selected by UEFA.com staff writers on the basis of their performances for a European club or national team in 2014.

UEFA will present a €100,000 cheque to the captain – picked by users – of the UEFA.com users' Team of the Year 2014, which will be donated to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
