Olympic champions await Danes

An 18-player Denmark squad will travel to the United States for two friendly internationals early next month.

By Peter Bruun

The Denmark coach Poul Højmose has selected an 18-player squad for next month's tour of the United States as preparations for the 2005 UEFA European Women's Championship begin in earnest.

Munch back
The winners of qualifying Group 2, Denmark will play the Olympic champions in New York on 3 November and Philadelphia three days later. Mariann Gajhede Knudsen is back in the squad after recovering from injury, while fine form for Brøndby IF has won Pernille Munch a return after she last played against Sweden in the Algarve Cup earlier this year.

Duo ruled out
Camilla Sand Andersen and goalkeeper Mette Bjerg are yet to represent the senior side, but have been included on the basis of mature displays for the Under-19s and Under-21s. Central midfield player Cathrine Paaske Sørensen is still struggling with a ligament injury sustained against Belgium in September but hopes to be fit for the opener in New York. Julie Rydahl Bukh and Tanja Mejer Christensen are both ruled out, however.

Cup final
Højmose has been unable to call on Dorte Dalum Jensen as she will be representing her club, Asker FK, in the Norwegian Cup final on 6 November. The Danes have won three of their 13 meetings with the Americans and drawn one, last tasting success on the Algarve in 1995.

Denmark squad
Cederkvist, Bjerg Horsens; Sand Andersen, G Andersen, Falk, G Knudsen, J Madsen, Pedersen; Dot Eggers, Hansen, Kjældgaard, Munch, Nielsen, Rasmussen, Paaske Sørensen; Jensen; Kjær Jensen, Pedersen.
