Stunning Spain smash scoring record

Spain 14-0 San Marino Iñaki Sáez's side move up after setting a new record victory margin in the competition.

Spain set a new record victory margin for the UEFA European Under-21 Championship as Fernando Llorente, Daniel Jarque and Jonathan Soriano all struck hat-tricks in a comprehensive qualifying Group 7 victory against San Marino.

Spain in second
The home side needed victory to leapfrog Belgium and Lithuania into the second play-off place, and the goal rush began in the fifth minute when David Silva planted a firm header into the top corner from Gabi Fernández's cross - and continued until Spain had bettered Austria's 10-0 win against Liechtenstein in 1990.

Four by half-time
Llorente neatly chipped Aldo Simoncini six minutes later to make it 2-0 then Silva struck again on 29 minutes, the ball taking a deflection past the visiting keeper. By the 44th minute Spain had gone 4-0 up - Llorente doubling his tally by thundering a powerful header in from a Gabi centre.

Pressure continues
Iñaki Sáez's troops piled on the pressure in the second half and Soriano swivelled to smash home goal number five just two minutes after the restart. The RCD Espanyol forward flicked in his second and Spain's sixth before Silva poked in his hat-trick on the hour. Soriano curled in a superb eighth goal on 64 minutes. Jarque nodded in number nine five minutes later.

Record set
Villarreal CF midfielder Héctor Font tapped Spain into double figures on 73 minutes to the delight of the home crowd. The visitors crumbled as Jarque headed the record-setting eleventh goal of the night shortly afterwards. Jarque grabbed his third goal with six minutes remaining and, in added time, Jesús Navas claimed the 13th and then Soriano his fourth.

Next fixtures
Spain are now just a point behind leaders Serbia and Montenegro, who they visit on 29 March. San Marino have lost their five games in the group and welcome Belgium the same day.
