Kazakhstan call time on Timofeev

Sergey Timofeev will leave his post as coach of the Kazakh national side after the Football Union of Kazakhstan opted not to renew his contract.

One point
A statement on the FSK website said that the 40-year-old "is released from his post following the end of the qualifying campaign for the 2006 [FIFA] World Cup." Kazakhstan, in their first qualifying competition for a major tournament as a UEFA member association, finished bottom of Group 2 with a single point, thanks to a goalless draw away to Georgia in their penultimate fixture on 8 October.

Youthful side
Timofeev's reign was characterised by his willingness to blood young players, an approach not universally popular in Kazakhstan. Following his departure, the FSK is planning to restore some more experienced players to the national team. Timofeev, who captained Kazakhstan during his playing days, will remain with the FSK until the new year when he will file a report on his reign.
