Juventus succeeded where neighbours Torino FC had failed the year before when they claimed the UEFA Cup for a record third time in 1993. That the architect of victory was German international Andreas Möller made their final defeat of BV Borussia Dortmund all the more galling for the Bundesliga club. However, the 6-1 aggregate margin was less a measure of Ottmar Hitzfeld's team than of Giovanni Trapattoni's.
Class apart
Certainly, Juventus had looked a class apart from the moment they put ten goals past Anorthosis Famagusta FC in the first round. And despite the hiccup of a 2-1 defeat by SL Benfica in the quarter-finals, they were never seriously troubled. Indeed the Portuguese side went the way of Panathinaikos FC, SK Sigma Olomouc and Paris Saint-Germain FC as they were thrashed 3-0 in the return leg in Turin.
Baggio double act
If the Bianconeri were on the verge of a new era of success at home and abroad, then Dortmund were not far behind. They were certainly worthy finalists: having knocked out traditional heavyweights Celtic FC, Real Zaragoza and AS Roma, then seen off AJ Auxerre on penalties in the last four. Yet their ambitions did not survive the final first leg at the Westfalenstadion. Michael Rummenigge's second-minute strike proved a false dawn as Juventus replied with two goals from Roberto Baggio and another from namesake Dino. The 3-0 second-leg scoreline merely iced Juve's cake.
