José Mari's early goal gave Spain a narrow friendly victory against Bulgaria in driving rain at Granada.

With Raúl González rested, Club Atlético de Madrid striker José Mari came in for his second cap, and was on target after just ten minutes.

Spain on top
Guti and Rubén Baraja also went close in the early period with headers as Spain dominated the opening stages, and Daniel Borimirov had Bulgaria’s sole first-half chance, saved by Iker Casillas.

Excellent run
Spain continued to produce lively play in the second half without creating clear-cut chances, and the victory continued their excellent run, which has seen them win their first two UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers without conceding a goal.

Estonia trip
Bulgaria, who lead the way in Group 8 with three wins out of three, have their next qualifier on 2 April in Estonia, four days after Spain visit Ukraine.
